Mobility Station
Analysis
The project is located in the center of Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg in Germany. A student dormitory was planned as an additional storey to a university building. The project is part of the downtown campus of the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences and the University of Stuttgart.
When creating a mobility concept, the current state is first analyzed. 5 different types of mobility are distinguished: Pedestrians, public transport, bicycles, cars and mobility-impaired persons. Due to the central location, pedestrians are the most important. The following figure shows the services are accessible by foot.
Concept
Next, a survey was conducted in student residences in downtown Stuttgart to get an idea of the needs of the students living there. One of the biggest difficulties in developing a mobility concept is the diversity of mobility behaviors. Therefore, four different types were created and their behaviors were then used to create the mobility concept.
One of the main aspects that were found out is that there is a need for a common car for the students living there. In terms of other forms of mobility such as public transportation or bicycle services, the survey shows that both are already fairly well developed, although a dedicated bus stop should be integrated on campus and bicycle parking facilities are not available as needed. Importantly, many survey respondents indicated that they would like to use sharing bikes if they were located near the building. The most important action is to develop a mobility hub near the project and move most parking off campus. These include bike and car sharing facilities, as well as parking for bicycles, e-bikes, etc.
To make the campus more livable the road that crosses it until now will be reduced and changed into a one-way-road. The vision for the future is, that the road is only accessable for adjacent owners like the students living in the new student’s dorm, public transportations and public infrastructures.
The second step means a big intervention in the city’s infrastructure, for which reason the city must change its attitude regarding car traffic. Thereby it would also be helping to reduce the street next to the campus. This means the alteration from a car-friendly to a human-friendly city and also the transformation of the city to a future state what is a lope but can bring many advantages.
multifunctional furniture
In addition, Smart Multifunctional Outdoor Furniture (SMOF) has been developed to provide not only open space, but also the ability to charge devices such as pedelecs, e-bikes, and smartphones.
They provide a high quality of stay and make the campus a more livable place for all students. In addition, they can also improve the environment through plants. The special thing about the furniture is that it is very easy to build and is made from old shuttering panels from construction sites.
