Urban Situation

Potential for addition of storeys is greatest in inner-city conurbations. The rising population numbers in cities are offset by the shortage of affordable housing. The Deutschlandstudie of 2019 by TU Darmstadt, also known as the Tichelmann study, shows that a good 1.1 million buildings would have potential for an increase in height.

Row buildings from the 1950s and 60s in particular lend themselves to this because of the high load reserves. The building we have chosen for our addition is an example of such a building.

With the parameterization of the design, new possibilities were created to transfer the concept to other sites. The developed tool was applied to a wide variety of buildings.

Parametric Design

Parametric design describes the generation of geometries based on parameters and their dependencies. An individual design is based on variables and algorithms. Relationships are created between these different parameters (e.g.: Line B = 2 x Line A). If the information of the initial parameters is changed (e.g. information about the geometry of the building), the geometry of the addition of storey varies at the same time.
